In transition
I thought I would upload some images of my latest attempt to experiment with styles while transitioning to natural hair. This is the two-strand twist out.  Basically, you take two pieces, as if you’re going to braid them, and twist them around each other.  The bigger the twist the more wavy the hair.  The smaller the twist the curlier it will be.  This is the first time I’ve done...

Holiday gluttony: a catch-22
So, the holidays are drawing to a close and I’m probably five pounds heavier. I gotta admit I took the holiday gluttony to a whole new level this year. I ate more sweets then ever. That was the newest change to the traditional gluttony. This years motto was saying yes…to everything offered to me. But, I balanced it out by intense workouts prior to consumption. That was the biggest...

The "Call Me" Text
We’ve all gotten a text message like that.  Someone you know sends you a text with 2 words “call me.”  I’m sorry, what now?  You will waste the 1 to 2 minutes it took you to type that and send it to me.  After that, there’s the inevitable wait as you wait for the person to see the text, read it, and then respond.  For me, I feel the “call me” text is a...

Constructive Criticism?
So, here’s my personal beef with “constructive” criticism…. First, lets take a part these two phrases: A. constructive: adj. 1. serving to build or improve; positive: constructive criticism B. criticism: noun –noun 1. the act of passing judgment as to the merits of anything. 2. the act of passing severe judgment; censure; faultfinding. 3. the act or art of...

The shit hit the fan
Yep, kids.  It’s about that time.  The time any graduate student dreads the most…the end of the semester.  I know what you’re thinking. You think this should be a happy time, cause for celebration.  But, alas dear chaps, the end of the semester means end of the semester papers, projects, exams, etc.  This, by no means, is a happy celebration.   But as I take the time to reflect...

Homework-free Sunday
I can remember exactly the day I decided to have a homework-free day… It was after a very long stint of doing homework non-stop.  I think it was about two weeks of stressing myself out.  The usual thoughts popped up, “Do I REALLY want to be in grad school?!” or “Fuck it, I don’t feel like doing this anymore.” or “Why can’t this be easy?!” I...

Sick? :0P
Inevitably, during your time in grad school, you get sick.  But, depending on the person you are, you may get sick multiple times.  Luckily, I’ve broken “getting sick” down to a science.  It’s pretty much common sense type stuff but, I find, people try to keep going about their lives as if they’re not sick.  Like their body isn’t waging this massive internal war...

Grad School isn't for Wussies
At first, I thought everyone was joking when they made the comment, “Are you sure you want to go to grad school? It can be pretty tough.”  I did what most people do.  I chuckled and shrugged it off telling myself that it was what I wanted to do and that to get anywhere in life, I needed to go to grad school. These are the thoughts I try to keep when grad school gets me down.  It gets...

Navigating the Professional World: The Clothes
Contrary to popular belief, I hate clothes shopping.  I admit, I have my moments where I love it.  I can’t get enough of it.  Regrettably, this is not one of those moments.  In about 3 weeks time, I have to attend my first professional conference.  I going to hang out with other archivists from the surrounding states and talk about archives things.  Sexy, right?  Not only that, in order to...

The To-Do List
Never underestimate the power of a To-Do list.  In grad school, the to-do list is your friend not your enemy.  Somewhere along the way, perhaps the 7 years spent in higher education, I started writing to-do lists.  At first, it was really depressing.  I kept having to move things over that I couldn’t get done.  Nothing like having to reschedule “wash hair” three times.  Instead,...

Stress Management
I’d like to say that I have some helpful thoughts on this topic.  Unfortunately, I don’t.  The only thing I can safely say is one of the things you should do….talk about it.  There is no sense OR shame in admitting, out loud, that you’re stressed.  Sometimes the very act of saying it, getting it out of your mind, is a little bit better than trying to bottle it up inside. ...

Gimme a break
I know I haven’t posted in a few days but the craziness of graduate school has set in.  Not only that, I’m in my final year.  Woo-hoo!  What made me think of this particular post is because what I’m currently doing at the moment….taking a break.  I’m busily typing this post while The Real Housewives of D.C. plays in the background. (Don’t judge me. It’s my...

Friends of Olde
Recently, I spoke to a friend I hadn’t talked to in several months.  Within minutes, I was overcome by fits of giggles and laughter.  We traded jokes and quirky observations while catching up on old and new business.  There was gossip…and it was glorious. Friends are a cherished gift.  They’re the people you’ve chosen to be in your life.  Family is different because, like...
